Hello all — I am excited to report that I have yet another book review for you! Back in the late summer of 2012 Diane Sanfilippo – creator and brains behind Balanced Bites released her first book — New York Time’s Best Seller Practical Paleo. Her first born is still one of my very favorite go-to books for weekly menu planning and fantastic recipes. Fast-forward just over a year and I’m holding her second book — The 21 Day Sugar Detox! Watch out folks, we’ve got a very talented lady on our hands!!
Diane Sanfilippo is a well-respected individual in the paleo/whole food community serving as a certified nutrition consultant, holistic lifestyle coach, and an author! Her site, Balanced Bites, is chock-full of information and support — from a weekly podcast, to recipes, helpful guides, a forum, and namely — The 21 Day Sugar Detox. The 21 Day Sugar Detox or (21DSD) is a three week “challenge” created by Diane — formulated to change your life. Sounds too good to be true; I know… but for 21 days you modify your eating habits by removing added sugars and very sweet foods from your diet. The program is focused on real food and designed to reduce and/or eliminate your cravings/crutch for sugar and carbohydrates.
Now, is this program for everybody? I truly raise my hand and answer, “yes!” Here’s why — the 21 Day Sugar Detox is NOT a low-carb, low-calorie, deprive yourself kind of program. There ARE programs out there that are, in my opinion, un-safe and promote disordered eating habits. I do not condone being on a “fad-diet” or restricting your calories in such a way that you become depleted of nutrients your body needs to thrive. THIS is not that kind of thing. One of the many reasons this program works so well is because it can be modified so much. As we all know — not everyone functions the same way — but the 21DSD provides special consideration for all sorts of lifestyles! The book outlines three program levels and you can find which one suits your needs the best — whether you are pregnant, an athlete, or have an autoimmunity. Diane’s got ya covered!
First thing to consider — do you even need to complete 21 days busting your sugar cravings? The book introduces 10 questions for you to answer. You might be surprised to find out — you might be addicted to sugar!
One of the things I appreciated from Practical Paleo was all the science-y type information that Diane illustrated so plainly — you can read my review here. The 21 Day Sugar Detox is nothing less! The book begins with the factual low-down on sugar — what is it? Where can it be found? How does it work in your body? And of course under certain conditions — what are the consequences? If you ever needed a simplified understanding of WHY excess sugar is bad for you — what is all the hype on sugar about!?…this book will be your saving grace.
So once you’ve decided to put yourself to the test — then what? What program is best for you? Again, the book has each level outlined with a self-quiz, lists of food you will enjoy eating, lists of food you will want to limit, and a list of NO foods — which believe me, you won’t miss. Diane has taken all of the guess work out of this for you. The book provides you with answers — to figuring out your personal carb count, easy replacements for foods you are used to eating, and even a cheat-sheet to help you stay on track when dining out at restaurants with friends and family.
Most importantly — during your 21DSD you’ll need guidance and support. Trust me, it will be tough! I have completed the 21DSD several times, and each time I love it more and more. The 21 Day Sugar Detox book is the ultimate tool for success — it contains day-to-day expectations throughout the detox along with a log that you can keep personally on how your body is feeling. Remember, the food you eat is what FUELS you — and once you’re eating properly your body WILL begin to thank you by changing in so many ways. You’ll want to keep note of how great you’re feeling! The book contains blogs, websites, and books that you can reference for information — all are 21DSD friendly! You will also have access to a whole list of suggested SAFE brands you can lean on that don’t have nasty sugar-laden ingredients on their labels.
Well, I saved the best for last. THE RECIPES!! I’ve gone on and on about how great Diane is at all the science behind sugar — but did I mention she kicks some serious butt in the kitchen!? Sweet-less treats never tasted so good!! Yes, that’s right — you get some dessert options on the 21DSD as well. The idea is to leave you feeling full, and happy, and satisfied, and healthy — this book will get you there. Full three week menus (breakfast, lunch, dinner, and snacks) are outlined for you — regardless of which level you decide to complete.
Convinced? You have to give it a try — it’s only THREE weeks of your entire life. Well worth the effort. Don’t get too excited — but come December there will be a 3rd book in Diane’s arsenal! The 21 Day Sugar Detox Cookbook is an entire book of her recipes that are 21DSD compliant — giving you unlimited inspiration for planning menus for you and your family!
