Book Review: “Gather” and Saffron Rice

If you follow the community or have even just one paleo pal — you’ve probably heard the scoop on Gather – The Art of Paleo Entertaining.  Written and photographed by Haley Mason and Bill Staley; this book is an absolute must-have in any food lover’s home.  Whether it is a cookbook you use weekly, just for special occasions, or as a centerpiece for discussion on the coffee table… Gather fits the bill.

These Two Never Quit!

Haley Mason and Bill Staley are the co-authors of the very popular Make it Paleo.  Well folks, they are at it again!!  Being a devout supporter of Make it Paleo, I knew Gather would be sure to please.  Among the many reasons to love Gather — its beauty stands out the most.

Through out Gather, Bill and Haley take you on a series of seven-teen beautifully photographed events.  Not only is the food beautiful, but the centerpieces, décor, and settings are just lovely.  The pictures alone serve as inspiration to invite all your friends over for dinner and wow them with the paleo lifestyle!  After all, Gather is a book about paleo entertaining — which we all know has more to it than excellent food.  When it comes to entertaining, I for one have struggled in making complete paleo dinners (ones that would serve a crowd).  I typically would make a dinner, and have a few paleo options available for myself and family.  That won’t be a struggle anymore, because Gather features recipes that are suited for having guests!

Get Ready to Make that Guest List!

Some of the themes include:  A Night in Tuscany, Spring Time Tea Party, and a Taste of Cuba.  Interested yet?  🙂  Those are just a few; don’t forget all the classics — meals for holidays like Thanksgiving and Christmas.  Gather has it all.  To make it even easier — not only are there great recipes, but the Food Lovers took it one step further.  For each event you have detailed guidance from Bill and Haley on how to shop, prepare, and even time your get-together.  Score!  FYI — You can find downloadable menu cards for each event on their website.

…but I Don’t Like Playing Hostess

Not a host/hostess kind of person?  Just want to get some new paleo recipes?  Not a problem.  While this book is primarily for entertaining, we all know there are nights of the week we want to make something a little special.  Besides, there are tons of side dishes and appetizers that you can easily incorporate in your weekly mix of favorites.

Don’t waste any time purchasing a copy of Gather.  The upcoming Spring & Summer months are full of opportunities to have folks over, and right after that the leaves turn color, it cools off, and you want that Pumpkin Torte with Cream Cheese Frosting and Caramel.  You know you’ll need some ideas for that paleo Halloween Party you’ve been wanting to throw.  Now you’ll have all the support you need in doing so.

Recipe Time!

Last night I prepared the Saffron Rice recipe straight from the Taste of Cuba menu.  It was amazing!  Very simple and flavorful.  I didn’t have any guests over — I used only one head of cauliflower and adjusted the amounts to fit a quick weeknight dinner.  Very versatile!  Honestly, the Saffron Rice would make a great side next time I do have company and I love that I can enjoy it either way.
